Educational Scholarships Immune Function and Fitness in Wild Insects

The Educational Scholarships successful candidate will benefit from working in a dynamic environment, Research in Biosciences (Cornwall Campus near Falmouth) School of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Exeter. The supervisor of the course, Professor Tom Tregenza.

Disease resistance and interactions between immune system and other fitness traits were investigated in detail in laboratory insects, but little is known in the natural populations. ThisEducational Scholarships thesis project is to build on an existing collaboration with Professor Mike Siva-Jothy of the University of Sheffield. Preparatory work has already been done to the function of the immune system in crickets and laboratory work the student is the basis for a proposal to grant NERC great shape and contribute to a proposal by the ERC to consider. Professor Tregenza currently leading a major project funded NERC followed a natural population of the crickets in a field in Spain (Rodriguez-Munoz et al. Science, 2009). By monitoring using SNP genotyping of all people and a wide range of video cameras, we know a lot about the lives of these insects, including how long they live, as in this fight, how often they mate, how many offspring they leave, etc. This Educational Scholarships project will include monitoring the function of the immune system of crickets for the relationship between immune function and other features of life history view and combines this approach with field and laboratory experiments.

Entry requirements: A strong first degree (at least an Upper Second Class Honours or equivalent) in a relevant subject.

You will only be eligible for the full stipend of £13,590pa if you are from the UK or EU and have been resident in the UK or EU for a minimum of three years prior to application.

This graduate scholarship focuses on the role of potentially innovative faith-based organizations (FBOs) in the United Kingdom in the provision of new forms of detention, rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders played. It is based on a conceptual framework to base a critical view of the objectives, such as a hand, the resources provided by religious organizations incorporated increasingly in control regime, but then, like trying to organizations faith, add the value of this investment through the implementation and performance of faith in the context of theological ethics.

The role of FBOs in the provision of services for marginalized people is an important area of research by members of the ethics of Exeter, Geography and Social Justice Research Group in recent years, with the work of Professor Paul Cloke on the provision of services for homeless people (Cloke et al, 2010) and religious organizations in the city (Beaumont and Cloke, 2011), and the work of Dr. Nick Gill on services for asylum seekers (Gill, 2010). FBOs together research areas of ethics, care, postsecularism, neo-liberal governance and religion, and there is a strand of the recent resurgence of the geography of religion in the United Kingdom.

This studentship will examine the role of “faith” in planning and operating services for offenders (see Beckford et al, 1998; Burnside et al, 2005; Sullivan, 2009). There are already several Christian-based prison units in the UK, and there are plans for a greater faith-involvement in this sector. The studentship is jointly funded by the Carpenter’s House Corrections Project Ltd (CHCP). In response to the 2009 report – Releasing Locked Up Potential – on prison reform by the Centre for Social Justice, and encouraged by the recommendation that Devon and Cornwall be selected as pilot areas for new Community Prison and Rehabilitation Trusts, CHCP has embarked on a development programme to build a faith-based correctional facility in the South West. They have a long-term plan in partnership with the Kainos Community who will act as service providers. Kainos currently operate wings in three English prisons, and there is evidence that their Challenge to Change programme has significantly lowered reoffending rates in these wings. CHCP are now in an advanced stage of planning and development for a new faith-based and community-based prison and rehabilitation project. The studentship will examine wider evidence from existing faith-based correctional and rehabilitation schemes for offenders, and will be given access to the CHCP scheme as a significant case study.

This research will seek to assess critically the role of faith in prison design and management, in programmes of rehabilitation and in systems of resettlement support. It will evaluate what works and what doesn’t, and it will investigate the claim that faith-based involvement can make prisons “more human”. It will use this detailed understanding to contribute to wider debates, both about faith motivation and the Third Sector, and the place of FBOs in arenas of care and welfare, and about working within the current political ideologies of localism and the “Big Society”.

Selection criteria

Applicants will be selected based on their previous academic career and on their Curriculum Vitae.

Amount of the scholarship

The gross amount of the Verrès Campus scholarship is 10.000 Euro per year (30.000 Euro for the complete period). The exact net sum is dependent upon the individual tax conditions of each student, which can be verified only upon the arrival of the student.
The amount of the scholarship will not be increased in case the student will need more time to graduate than indicated.
The allocation of the scholarship is dependent upon the submission of the original documentation, which must correspond with the documentation attached to the application form (see the “Selection outcomes” section below).
Payment of the scholarship occurs periodically. The first instalment is dependent upon the possession of the relevant documentation (residence permit, Italian fiscal code, and bank account in the name of the scholarship recipient), all obtainable upon arrival in Italy.

Requirements to maintain the scholarship

Given that it is not possible to combine the benefits received from more than one scholarship, students who are assigned another study grant while receiving the Verrès Campus scholarship must promptly notify the Politecnico di Torino.
Payment of the scholarship will be suspended if the academic performance of the recipient does not meet a satisfactory level.
In case the recipient does not regularly attend the activities at the Verrès Campus, the scholarship will be revoked.

UNHCR provides, on a limited basis, scholarships for refugees at the tertiary level in universities and polytechnic institutions through the Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative Fund (DAFI). Funding for this programme is provided by the Federal Government of Germany.

The purpose of the DAFI Programme is to contribute to the self-reliance of refugees by providing them with a professional qualification for future employment. Scholarships are granted only for studies in the country of asylum. Preferably, UNHCR would like to see the graduates return home and contribute to the reconstruction of their home country, or to the development of the country of asylum
or the refugee community at large.

Are DAFI scholarships available in every country?

DAFI scholarships are provided only in developing countries or countries in transition. DAFI programmes are mostly available in developing countries with a significant refugee population, mostly in Africa and Asia. There are also a limited number of DAFI scholarships in some countries of Eastern Europe and Latin America. Each year, more than 1,000 refugee students benefit from the programme.

Because of its financial limitations, competition for scholarships is high and only a portion of the qualified candidates can be admitted to the programme. Therefore, selection criteria have been established which are to be strictly followed.

Who can apply?

In order to be eligible, a candidate should:
• be a refugee with recognised refugee status;
• have successfully completed secondary schooling to a high standard in campbased refugee schools, or in national schools of the country of origin or asylum;
• have no other means of support for university studies;
• select a course of study that is likely to lead to employment in the country of origin;
• not be older than 28 years at the beginning of studies (An exemption could be applied to health and education courses of shorter duration provided to health staff and teachers with previous working experience or employment);
• select a choice of study course with maximum three to four years duration.

Eligibility:

National Institute for Medical Research is offering a 3 year Career Development Fellowship (CDF) which is a training and development position for post-doctoral scientists. The project aims at understanding the function of frataxin, the protein responsible for Friedreich’s ataxia, and at correlating the function with the pathology. The methods of study will cover different biophysical and biochemical methods among which the two most important ones are NMR and/or X-ray crystallography. Knowledge in one or both techniques is therefore a requirement. A good knowledge of biochemistry, protein purification and possibly enzymology is also necessary. Applicants will have recently completed their doctoral studies, are moving into a new research discipline, have limited previous experience of key transferable skills. A CDF will provide opportunities to develop research project skills and collaborative links with colleagues within the Institute and elsewhere.

The Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship (DPDF) is designed to help early-stage graduate students in the humanities and social sciences formulate more effective doctoral dissertation proposals. Senior tenured faculty serve as research directors who identify research fields for groups of 12 graduate students. The faculty research directors design two workshops: one to prepare students to undertake summer research that will inform the design of their dissertation proposal, held in spring; the other to help students apply their summer research experiences to writing dissertation and funding proposals, held in the fall. Faculty Application

Each year, the DPDF’s Faculty Field Selection and Advisory Committee selects five research fields, each proposed by two tenured senior faculty with different institutional affiliations and, as relevant, different disciplinary specializations. Selected faculty serve as research directors for their proposed research fields, design the two workshops for their research field, and lead 12 selected fellows in those workshops.

The DPDF program is open to tenured faculty teaching in different doctoral-degree-granting programs at U.S. universities. Faculty must apply as teams and must be tenured at the time of application. Research directors are required to be present and participate in both workshops. The dates are announced before the opening of the annual application cycle and posted on the competition Web page for the year in question.

Amount Awarded

Each research director receives a stipend of $10,000 for preparing and running the workshops that bracket the student summer research fellowships, as well as for sustained mentorship of the graduate student cohort throughout the summer.

DPDF Eligibility Criteria for Faculty

Research directorships in each field are held by two tenured faculty members from different doctoral degree-granting programs at universities in the United States. Faculty must apply as teams; they must be tenured at the time of application; and must be trained in different disciplines or must bring different methodological frameworks to the field. Faculty should be experienced supervisors of dissertation research. Research directors are required to participate in both workshops, the dates for which can be found in the DPDF Application and Award Timeline. New College invites applications for a Professional Development Award in French (which will be held in stock lending) for four years with effect from October 1, 2010 based on New College, Oxford. The incumbent is involved in research and offers eight hours per week of language and guidance for New College of two centuries of modern times (16th-18th century) literature, and partly the administration of French in school. There is no possibility of renewal after September 30, 2014.

We particularly appreciate the requirements of the "The CollegeProwler Essay Competition". This competition requires that you submit up to three college application essays that you have already written and submitted. Now that's a great example of the power of reuse, recycle.

The Scholarship Cover Letter

The application cover letter conveys the package from you to the funding organization. It is one more opportunity to demonstrate professionalism and knowledge of appropriate business etiquette.

If possible, make a determination to whom the letter should be addressed. Be sure you have that individual's name and title spelled correctly. Avoid using either, "Dear Sir" or Dear Madam".

In the body of the letter, express your pleasure at the opportunity to submit your application for the specific award you are seeking. It's always useful to add a sentence praising the work or the mission of the funding organization.

Close the letter by expressing your enthusiasm for participating in the process and always thank the recipient for their time and consideration.
